Doppler ultrasound tests are used to help health care providers find out if you have a condition that is reducing or blocking your blood flow. It may also be  used to help diagnose certain heart diseases . The test is most often used to: Check heart function 

Carotid ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the carotid arteries in the neck which carry blood from the heart to the brain. A Doppler ultrasound study a technique that evaluates blood flow through a blood vessel  – is usually part of this exam 

The radiologist may use a Doppler ultrasound, which shows blood flowing through the arteries. In a Doppler ultrasound, the rate of blood flow is translated into a graph. A carotid ultrasound usually takes  about 30 minutes
