CT Whole Abdomen Plain Test

Computed tomography scan abdomen, C.T. scan – abdomen C.T. pelvis and abdomen

An abdomen C.T. scan is an imaging technique. The test uses x-rays to create cross-sectional photos of the abdomen area.

What is the test's purpose?

You'll be lying on a small table that slides in the middle of the C.T. scanner. The majority of the time, you'll rest on your back with your arms elevated over your head.

Once inside the scanner, its beam of x-ray beam turns around you. Modern spiral scanners can complete the test with no interruption.

Computers produce distinct images of the belly region. They are known as slices. The images can be stored or viewed on a screen or printed onto film. 3-D representations of the belly can be created by stacking the slices.

It is imperative to be still while taking the test since motion can cause blurred images. You might be instructed to keep your breath for short durations of time.

In most cases, abdominal C.T. is carried out with the help of a pelvis C.T.

The scan should last under 30 minutes.

How do you prepare for the test?

You must be wearing a specific dye called contrast put into your body before tests. Contrast can help certain areas show better on images. Contrast is administered through a variety of methods. For example:

  • Contrast may be administered via the vein (IV) within your forearm or hand. If contrast is administered in the test, you could be instructed not to drink or eat anything between 4 and 6 hours before the test.

  • You may need to drink the contrast before the test. Drinking it before the exam depends on the kind of test being taken. Contrast is chalky in taste; however, some varieties are flavoured, making them taste better. In contrast, the drink you drink will be released from your body via your stools and is entirely safe.

Inform your doctor inform them if you've experienced a reaction to contrast. You may require medication before the test to ensure that you are safe from the drug.

Before taking the contrast, be sure to inform your physician whether you're taking metformin, a diabetes medication. Patients taking this medication may be required to discontinue using it for a time before the test.

Contact your physician if you have kidney issues. The IV contrast may aggravate kidney function.

The weight of too much can harm the scanner. Find out whether the C.T. scanner has a weight limit if the weight exceeds 300 pounds (135 kg).

It is necessary to remove your jewellery and put on your hospital gown for the research.

What will the test Feel like?

Letting your body rest on the table can be a bit uncomfortable.

If you're experiencing contrast in an IV (IV), it could mean that you be suffering from:

  • A slight burning sensation

  • A metallic taste is present in the mouth

  • A warm flush of the body

The feelings you experience are normal and will go away in seconds.

What is the reason for performing the test?

An abdominal C.T. scan takes detailed photos of the structure inside your abdomen in a short time.

This test could be used to determine:

  • The reason for blood in the urine

  • The cause of abdominal pain or swelling

  • The reason for irregular blood tests, such as kidney or liver problems

  • Hernia

  • A fever is a reason behind it.

  • Tumours and masses, including cancer

  • Infections and injuries

  • Kidney stone

  • Appendicitis

What do abnormal results mean?

An abdominal C.T. scan can reveal a variety of cancers, for example:

  • The cancer of the kidney pelvis, or the ureter

  • Colon cancer

  • Hepatocellular cancer

  • Lymphoma

  • Melanoma

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Pancreatic cancer

  • Pheochromocytoma

  • Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)

  • Cancers spread to the abdomen.

An abdominal C.T. scan could reveal problems with the gallbladder, liver or pancreas. This includes:

  • Acute Cholecystitis

  • The liver is a significant organ of the body.

  • Cholelithiasis

  • Pancreatic Abscess

  • Pancreatic pseudocyst

  • Pancreatitis

  • Blockage of the bile conduits

An abdominal C.T. scan could identify the following kidney issues:

  • The kidneys can be blocked.

  • Hydronephrosis (kidney growth caused by inflowing urine)

  • Kidney infection

  • Kidney stones

  • Kidney or ureter injury

  • The polycystic kidney disorder

The abnormal results could be caused by:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

  • Abscesses

  • Appendicitis

  • Bowel wall thicknessening

  • Crohn disease

  • Renal artery narrowing

  • The thrombosis of the renal vein

Risks

The risks of C.T. scans are:

  • Allergies to contrast dye

  • Exposure to radiation

  • The kidneys are damaged due to the contrast dye

C.T. scans subject you to higher levels of radiation than typical x-rays. Several x-rays or C.T. scan over time could increase the risk of cancer. But the risk of each scan is low. Modern scanners can limit radiation exposure. Consult your physician about the risk and advantages of the test in receiving a precise diagnosis of your medical issue.

Certain people are allergic to contrast dye. Inform your doctor whether you've ever experienced the reaction of an allergy to the injection of contrast dye.

The most popular kind of contrast that is injected into veins is Iodine. If you suffer from an iodine allergy, you could experience symptoms of nausea, vomiting, sneezing, itching, or an allergic reaction if you receive this kind of contrast. If you have to be treated with the contrast, your physician might prescribe an antihistamine (such as Benadryl) as well as steroids before the test.

The kidneys assist in removing IV dye from your body. You might require extra fluids after the test to aid in flushing the Iodine out from your body if you suffer from diabetes or kidney disease.

Sometimes, the dye could trigger an allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. Inform the scanner operator immediately if you experience difficulty breathing while you are testing. The scanners have an intercom and speakers, which means that the scanner operator will be able to hear you throughout the day.
