What is the Covid-19 RT-PCR Test?

RT-PCR stands for a Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. An RT-PCR test is considered one of the most accurate testings for the novel coronavirus disease.

An RT-PCR test uses nasopharyngeal swab/oral swab/nasal swab for the identification of virus particles in the patients. The test is carried out by trained professionals with the help of an RT-PCR test kit. It involves the extraction of genetic material (RNA) of the Covid-19 virus. Covid-19 RT-PCR test detects the genes specific for the SARS-COV-2 virus (the virus that causes Covid-19 disease).

Who should get the Covid-19 RT-PCR test done?

People who experience initial symptoms of coronavirus such as difficulty in breathing or loss of smell/taste. Fever, cough, headache, muscle ache, and sore throat are some symptoms of coronavirus disease.

Most people get confused with coronavirus and common cold as they both share similar symptoms. Hence if the patient experiences any one of the above symptoms, it is advisable to get the Covid-19 RT-PCR test done, following the ICMR guidelines.

What does the Covid-19 RT-PCR result mean?

The results are positive if the sample detects the genes specific to the SARS-COV-2 virus. The results are negative if the sample does not detect any genes specific to the SARS-COV-2 virus.

How is the Covid-19 RT-PCR test performed?

Covid-19 RT-PCR is a swab test, not a blood test. At Sarwarpro we perform automated extraction for Covid-19 and RT-PCR tests by using Thermofisher quaint studio 5 real-time RT-PCR machine.
