Neuro Physiotherapy

What is Neuro Physiotherapy?

A physiotherapist is primarily involved in neurological conditions. This includes people with movement or function disorders caused by disorders of the nervous system and neuromuscular system.

These patients complain of muscle weakness, coordination and balance loss, and uncontrolled movements due to increased muscle tone and tremors.

These are some of the most common neurological conditions that physiotherapists will see:

  • Functional Neurological Disorders

  • Stroke or CVA

Traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injury, such as:

  1. Paraplegia;

  2. Spina Bifida

  3. Julianne Barre Syndrome (GBS)

  4. Poliomyelitis

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Parkinson's Disease

  • ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), TMS (transverse myelitis), and MG (Myasthenia gravis).

  • Muscular dystrophies

  • Poliomyelitis

  • Myelopathies

A patient with acute neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal injury, or traumatic brain injuries will need immediate medical attention. These patients are treated initially at the hospital. After stabilizing the patient with initial medical treatment, the neurologist will recommend neuro physiotherapy while staying in the hospital. The physiotherapist will do a comprehensive assessment of the patient's cognition and perception, strength, coordination, balance, and coordination. Then, a treatment plan will be developed according to the patient's needs.

Treatment

The physiotherapist may offer the following options depending on the findings of each patient:

  • Active or Passive assisted ROM Exercises: If the patient is unable to or only slightly able, the patient can perform arm and leg movements.

  • Positioning/splinting: The limbs are correct to prevent muscle tightening in a careless position. It helps to prevent bedsores.

  • Circulation and Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing/segmental exercises help maintain the airway, prevent respiratory complications, and reduce the risk of chest infections. Elevation, gentle passive movements and ankle-toe pumps reduce the chance of developing DVTs.

  • Teaching transfer methods: The physiotherapist trains the patient in bed mobility and simple transfer techniques to move safely, stand, walk, and sit up.

  • Mobility Aids Physiotherapists instruct patients on using a walking frame or other aids safely.

  • Making necessary home changes: A physiotherapist will look at your home and assess the environment. Then, they will recommend any changes and pieces of equipment you may need after discharge.

  • Exercise - exercises to increase strength, endurance, and coordination.

After discharge from the hospital, rehabilitation can be continued at a neuro physiotherapy clinic near me, a community-based rehabilitation center, or home, depending on the patient's needs. To achieve the desired results, the Therapist and family members work together closely. These exercises help to reduce hypertonic muscle tone.

They may include stretching exercises and inhibitory techniques. Facilitatory technique, PNF, and reinforcement techniques can aid the muscles that are under-working. For weak muscles, a muscle stimulator may be used early on. The holistic approach to treatment considers the whole patient and incorporates exercises into daily living activities. A few patients may need additional support, high-level care, or specialized equipment.

Cerebellar involvement can cause balance and coordination problems in patients. Patients with cerebellar involvement have difficulty getting up from the bed, afraid of falling. The Therapist must help the patient be as positive and cooperative as possible while they exercise. Frankel exercises that balance and coordinate have been specially created to help with the problem. They are the most reliable exercises and have proven very effective over the years.
